Grading Policies/Course Components
Grades and credit come under six categories: discussion, reading quizzes, papers/writing assignments, Power Point presentations, and exams.
Discussion: This is the focus of the course. Students are expected to come prepared to class, having done the assigned readings. All students begin the quarter with 100 points for discussion. Points may be subtracted during the quarter for insufficient participation, lack of preparation, or inappropriate behavior.
Readings: These are assigned weekly. Reading quizzes or assessments are given on block days each week; they are worth 30 points each. Students must complete seven reading quizzes/assessments during a quarter. 200 points total for the quarter. There are no make-up quizzes given; students may miss one or two quizzes and still fulfill the seven-quiz requirement. Questions about absences should be discussed with Mr. Lovett.
Papers/Writing: Writing assignments are normally due each Monday with some exceptions. As with readings, students must complete seven assignments for the quarter.
They are 30 points each with a total of 200 points for the quarter. Students may miss one or two papers and still fulfill the quarter requirement. For full credit, papers must be received on the due date; late papers will be accepted for one week with a 10% deduction. After one week, papers will not be accepted.
Power Point: Students will prepare and show to the class a Power Point presentation each quarter. These are worth 50 points.
Exams: There will be one exam each quarter, a series of essays designed to sum up the work of the class. Exams are worth 50 points; the second-quarter (semester) exam will also be worth additional credit (20% of semester grade).
